Cole Masson (b. 2003) is a composer from Indiana who writes in a variety of styles and mediums, but most frequently for winds. He grew up in West Lafayette, IN, where he played the euphonium and trombone in all of the ensembles that his high school offered, including the concert, jazz, marching, and pep bands as well as the pit and symphony orchestras. These experiences led Cole to pursue an education and a career in composition, to which end he is currently completing a bachelor’s degree in composition at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, where he has studied with professors Don Freund, P.Q. Phan, David Dzubay, and Gabriel Jenks. He will graduate in the spring semester of 2026.

Cole’s music has had many performances across the various concert halls at the Jacobs School of Music, including Auer Hall, Ford Hall, and Recital Hall. His piece Moon Music for euphonium octet is to be performed at Fort Myer in Virginia at the U.S. Army Band Tuba-Euphonium Workshop in February of 2026. In addition to composition, Cole studies euphonium with Dr. Gail Robertson, and has gained valuable large ensemble, solo, and chamber playing experience. Cole is also a member of Indiana University’s Marching Hundred, where he serves as the Head Undergraduate Staff for the trombone section, leading sectional rehearsals and organizing the group, both during and outside of rehearsals. He also plays in IU’s other athletic bands—the Big Red Basketball Band and the Crabb Band.
